Did you know that Doctor Seuss’s name wasn’t really Doctor Suess? In fact, he wasn’t a doctor at all! His real name was Theodor Geisel and he was born almost a hundred years ago.
Dr. Seuss started out writing magazine ads, but then decided to write a book for children. He only used the name "Doctor Suess" for his children’s books. He chose the title "Doctor" because it was something his father always wanted him to be, and "Suess" because it was his middle name.

The name of his first book for children was "To Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street." (Maybe you’ve read it.) Did you know that he had to go to 29 different companies before it was published? But once people read it, they wanted more.

Back in the 1950’s, books that helped children learn to read were really boring, so someone asked Dr. Suess to write a book that could help kids learn to read and entertain them at the same time. "The Cat in the Hat" was born. Even though it’s 50 years old, "The Cat in the Hat" still helps lots of children have fun while they read. It’s Jaxson’s favorite!

Dr. Suess died in 1991, but he lives on in the hearts of his readers. He wrote over 40 books which are still being read by millions of children worldwide, in 18 different languages! (Jaxson reads the ones that are written in Jaguar.)
